Who We Are

The Alberta Centre for Emerging Democracies (ABCFED) is a registered non-partisan, non-for-profit organization in Alberta. It is established with the following mission statements:

  • To facilitate research and training on the practice of democracy internationally;
  • To explore Alberta and Canada as case studies of established democracies;
  • To monitor the trends of political and democratic norms in established and emerging democracies;
  • To foster collaboration among institutions, scholars and students locally and internationally; and
  • To promote innovative tools and technologies for democracies.

A core operational strategy of ABCFED is to work in consultation with citizens and key civil society stakeholders including post-secondary institutions. The Centre offers volunteering opportunities for under-represented populations in local and national governance as well as groups in society that seek a more meaningful engagement in politics than what currently exists. ABCFED's motto is "every voice counts". Through roundtables, workshops, and conferences, ABCFED contributes to impactful civic engagements in society. ABCFED is also enriched by hosting researchers and civil society organizations for collaborative projects and insightful exchange of ideas on deliberative democracy.
